Whacking the Back Out
by Lesley Powell
I was doing a constructive rest practice last week. I got up too quickly and my back muscles reacted. My muscles are in spasm and my pelvis is out of line.
Stupidity.
How many times do I tell clients to take their time getting out of a rest position.
I hurt my back like this a decade ago carrying a computer down a 6 floor walkup.
The hardest thing is to sit. If I put my lower spine in too much flexion, the discomfort increases.
The most helpful thing is moving without pushing and properly doing constructive rest. Walking is the best to get the spine warmed up and unstuck.
In my Pilates practice, gentle movements of the pelvis in all directions such as pelvic clock, feel great. Getting my legs active also feels great. Any full range of the pelvis such as rolldown, some bridging and full swan does not feel great. Stretching the hip joints and legs seem to have gentle repercussions in how my sacrum/pelvis feels.
I also got some outside help with visiting my rolfer and this week, Cranial Sacral Work.
