The arms connect to the torso through the shoulder girdle, shoulder blades, clavicles and humerus bones. Each bone moves in different degrees of rotation and timing. The timing and the control of these motions are essential to a healthy shoulder. This “scapular-humeral rhythm” is like a symphony—each bone is an instrument playing a different variation of a melody.
When the shoulder girdle moves correctly, great function is invited. Each bone of the shoulder girdle; the clavicles, the scapulae and the humerus bone, have a unique rhythm of movement to facilitate the arm moving in space.
A great scapular-humeral rhythm will invite the correct phrasing of the arm and core muscles. When you get a client to better use her shoulder girdle, her arm strength, posture and connection to the core will improve. Learn how this rhythm works and how to help your clients improve theirs.

Last weekend, the B Fit faculty initiated the first segment of our BodyMind fitness certificate program. Dr. Martha Eddy, Doris Pasteleur Hall and Lesley Powell, taught practical and effective movement approaches to working with the core of the body.

Friday night: Lesley Powell started out with understanding how the spine moves in different planes from a skeletal perspective. Dr. Martha Eddy took us through spinal roll downs with using imagery from different physiological imagery – we flexed and extended initiating from vertebral articulations, organ activation, spinal cord lengthening, and synovial fluid loosening. It was fascinating how a roll down could change in response to how you thought about the movement. Each image brought different kinds of mobility and connection.

Saturday: Doris showed through Anatomy in clay what the muscles of the back looked like and their importance for support. Students loved being able to see visually how anatomy looks. It’s an exciting way to learn the details of muscular anatomy. They also enjoyed a Movements Afoot Pilates mat and springs class using body-mind imagery, taught by Kim Fielding.

Sunday: Lesley Powell gave a class using balance equipment to physically feel the importance of coordinating breath, and the muscles of the pelvic floor, deep abdominals and the multifidus is for core support. We explored movement in all levels and planes.

In the afternoon Martha reviewed all the prior info of the weekend and brought in the importance of organ support, equal joint space, and the interaction of four horizontal diaphragms in the body.

Monday: The students brought newly gained info into teaching task. Each showed how they used these concepts to a familiar core stabilization or strengthening exercise. Many were surprised that the majority of activities involved deep relaxation! Martha helped them see what bigger kinesiological and somatic concepts they each were applying and put the whole weekend into a developmental perspective. This gives everyone an understanding of what exercises to use when.

We are delighted to have this wonderful group of fitness professionals sharpening their expertise with us.

You are invited to join us in May or July if this of interest to you!

The first weekend, teachers join us for our workshop on Core March 12-15. Kim Fielding will teach a unique class with the theme of Core of the Matter for everyone March 13 at 10 AM. Sign up for her Pilates Mat & Toys to get a new insight of your core.

Dr. Martha Eddy: So many people talk about the core of the body…and when the fitness specialists activate your core they get your muscles strengthened to help your posture.

But when You think about or feel your abdomen what else is happening…

…often its a gurgle in your intestines, a change of tone in an organ,
a busy glandular system.

With a body-mind fitness approach to core as a trainer or a trainee you will also learn to involve the healthy use of our inner body, your deepest core in retraining the balanced use of all the deep and superficial layers of your body. We call this organ support. When the organs are happy your muscles are more at ease.

Tonifying organ tissue also helps you to access the deepest layers of your musculature which ultimately improves posture. So by working with the body-mind view of core you both tonify your organs and work efficiently with your muscles. Come learn to do this with anatomical imagery, exercises, and self-awareness techniques in our new BodyMind Fitness Certification.

Lesley Powell

Lesley Powell: Core is 3-dimensional: front, side and back. Core is dynamic. It changes depending what the movement is. Core support should give your spine its freedom in length to move. A compressed spine lacks mobility. Some think of core as only a crunch abdominal exercise.

When my health issues affect my stomach, my psoas and diaphragm gets tight. This tightness leads to problems in my spine. No one is talking much how illness affects the organs and their affect on wellness.

I am proud to say that I passed the BBU Pilates Teacher Comprehensive Exam on Friday night at Movements Afoot!!

I am writing to thank you and everyone at Balanced Body University. The program is excellent. The information is written wonderfully and organized beautifully! I received great support from you, and everyone at BBU whom I contacted, as well as the Customer Service Representatives that I spoke with to order my equipment, DVDs, etc..

So, again, THANK YOU!

I also want everyone at BBU to know what a tremedous asset you have in Lesley Powell as your New York, New York BBU Educator. She is truly a gem. Her knowledge is unparalleled and her feedback is essential. She ran the BBU program seamlessly!!

I am the mother of three small children, I teach classes/train clients in the mornings/evenings/on weekends and care for my family when I’m not “working”. Having the ability to take the modules at Movements Afoot once a month allowed me the time to do everything I needed for BBU, for my family, for my profession and for myself. I love the way Lesley set up the program!

She made me a better teacher AND a better student! During my observations at other studios, I found my appreciation and admiration for Lesley grow. Most Pilates Teachers, while good in their own right, do not have the extensive biomechanic/body-mind knowledge that I have gained from doing my training with Lesley!

It takes an incredible teacher to make great teachers and BBU has that in Lesley Powell!

I look forward to doing my continuing education as a Teacher and Student with Lesley and BBU!” With gratitude, and, Kindest regards, Cheri Wild

It is my view that the muscular instability behind back pain is not in the abdominals or back muscles but in the muscles that stabilize the pelvis (gluteus medius) during standing and walking. I will give a workshop on this topic in NY in April at Movements Afoot. Go to my website for details: body-in-motion.com.

When a person comes in with back issues, I always observe how they use their legs. I find many are very weak in leg strength and how it relates to posture, walking and everyday movements. Irmgard Bartenieff explained it beautifully with with her Bartenieff Fundamental: pelvic shift forward and Lateral. I introduce these concepts to my clients. Pelvic shift forward is a bridge that requires you to use your legs. When you see someone weak in the legs, the client will compensate with their backs. With this weakness, you see the back higher than the legs.

Then the next step is bringing this to standing. This Spring Dianne joins up in April and Dr. Martha Eddy and I teach BodyMind Fitness: UNDERSTANDING May 21-24.

Introduction to 3-D Workout
With Dianne Woodruff
Date: Sunday 11 April 2010
Time: 2-5 p.m. $120

3-D Workout is a low-impact, low-tech fitness program you can do anywhere. This workshop introduces you to the basics as shown on the DVD and then some. We use our bodies in three-dimensions at all times so your exercise should go beyond the conventional biceps curl and other single plane exercises. The 3-D Workout program, developed by Dianne Woodruff, CMA, PhD, is inspired by the Laban/Bartenieff framework. Available in classes and as instructor training, this workshop is open to all. DVDs will be available for sale at a discount.

Sacroiliac treatment protocol
With Dianne Woodruff
Date: Sunday 11 April 2010
Time: 9:30-12:30 $120

This workshop offers a step-by-step method of assessment and treatment for sacroiliac pain. It includes the anatomical framework and function, observation of whole-body and defined body parts in motion, various tests for sacroiliac dysfunction and methods for treating the problem. The workshop, aimed at “the dead seven inches” is an application of Bartenieff Fundamentals in a therapeutic framework. Open to personal trainers, pilates/yoga instructors and health practitioners. Taught by Dianne Woodruff.

Glute strength for true balance
With Dianne Woodruff
Date: Saturday 10 April 2010
Time: 1-4 p.m. $120

We have only two legs and must stand on one of them to take a step. No one would argue the importance of good balance and prevention of falls. Balance boards and other devices are fine but the anatomical and functional issues behind bipedal stability deserve more attention. This seminar for pilates instructors, personal trainers and health-care practitioners addresses essential movement patterns for bipedal stability and a healthy back in a pedestrian culture. Such patterns were identified and researched by Dr. Vladimir Janda as early as 1964. Over the last 20 years Dr. Woodruff has developed an approach to assessment, correction and preventive exercise that you will learn in this seminar.

SHOULDER WORKSHOP:
Scapular Revolution with Lesley Powell

Time: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM Sunday August 1 9:00 AM- 4 PM $200
