Taking classes at Movements Afoot helps me connect to my body by teaching me how to use it correctly. I’ve had many back injuries in the past and I consider myself very fortunate to have found an environment that cares enough to understand the physical problems faced by each student. The teachers are professionally trained and sensitive to the needs of each student. I owe many thanks to the staff if Movements Afoot.

You are the GOOD WITCH OF THE NORTH from the Wizard of oz.  During class I was able to understand and feel my body working correctly when you explained and showed me how to move correctly. Each time I come to class my body understands the movements better. I moved through the pain by using the correct muscles. I’m working on my posture which is the key to my problems. Thanks for your concern and understanding of the human body and how it works.

Mich’i’el Murkofsky Dancer and teacher

As a dancer, I had been searching for a studio that could address my particular weaknesses and habits. I wasn’t looking for another dance class, but rather some place that could really help me. I had very high standards. I was looking for an environment that had extensive knowledge of the body and could address the issues dancers faced. I wanted teachers who were knowledgeable, intelligent and generous with their particular expertise .I was certain such a place did not exist until I was introduced to Movements Afoot.

Movements Afoot offers such a wide variety of classes. I embraced the Physioball classes, the Iyengar Yoga classes, the Pilates Stand classes and most recently the Tower classes. It is in fact the incredibly gifted teachers at Movements Afoot who are enabling me to enhance my dancing and make the physical changes that I need to make. Studying at Movements Afoot has been a rare and wonderful experience in my life. Thank you Lesley Powell for creating such a special studio.

Lesley & AkiAki Akrai Lesley Powell is my first and best Pilates teacher. I met her when I had the lower back pain because of my sprain of the knee from dance. I was aware my whole body through her devoted teaching with her extensive knowledge. As well as her exact teaching, she always welcomes everyone who is eager their body and life.
I miss her warm smile from Tokyo, Japan where I teach Pilates now.

Bonner Elwell

Facing a total knee replacement operation on June 13th, 2006 and being in considerable pain, I enrolled in physical therapy sessions with Nicola Weiner whose care and guidance was incomparable and in a once-a-week one-hour session with a Pilates instructor at Movements Afoot. This resulted in building up an essential strength and knowledge prior to the operation. The intelligence of the Pilates system of exercises is profound and challenging. The emphasis on centering, core awareness and alignment became my concentration. I was as ready for the surgery as I could be and a month after the surgery, I returned to Nicola Weiner, my physical therapist and, subsequently, to Heather Mims, my Pilates instructor. Swollen and timid, I started again building slowly and carefully the necessary alignments, flexibilities and strengths. A year later I’m back to my life with confidence, strength and an expanding interest in this most direct and substantial understanding of the ways of the body.

I love this place!!!  If you have been on the body sculpting, strength training track and are bored with the fitness clubs…here is a fantastic alternative!!
Pilates is not just the mat anymore—there are tons of different apparatus to always make the experience more enjoyable.  One day my feet are in straps and the next I am standing and doing pilates as a cardio experience!!  Balls, rolls, resistance bands and more-(oh my!)
The difference between this studio and others is the care and attention that is paid to the body-each person in each class learns how to position and strengthen the body safely and for ultimum results.  You can’t ask for more!!!
And I can’t end without raving about Lesley!!!  If you want to keep the same body well into your 90′s Lesley and her staff will take you there.
Saturday mornings with Kim (reserve early) are also my favorite as I take a double-totally awesome workouts all.

I love Movements Afoot.  I never knew exercise could be fun and interesting.  The teachers are great.  My clothes fit differently since I started my Pilates practice here.  I started first with their free intro and then bought their sampler package.  Now I am a Pilates addict.

I started Pilates at the gym. Too fast, bad teaching. You got to come to Movements Afoot to know the difference how intelligent Pilates can make the difference in your fitness.

* Pros: fun, great Pilates classes
* Cons: Wish I had more time/money to take classes here.

I do private sessions with Tracie Matthews. She’s all I could possibly hope for in an instructor. She finds a way to challenge me every single class and she pays attention to every little detail. In 8 months she’s completely transformed my body. I’m more flexible, my muscles are leaner and longer, I’m more *aware* of my body. Pilates isn’t a fad, it isn’t just for women (I’m male), and it isn’t easy. It is a way to strengthen and tone your body, to connect your muscles and bones, to unify your mind and body, to challenge your physical (and in a sense mental) limits. And I can’t imagine anyone guiding you through it better than Tracie.

I feel like it’s all about me and my body when I’m there. It’s not like some of the pilates studios in town where you feel like a number or a check. The staff makes me feel comfortable and secure. I have learned so much about the mechanics of my body. My posture, flexibility and strength have greatly improved. I can’t possibly recommend it highly enough.

I definitely recommend Kim F. as an instructor. I have gone to KIm for almost all of my sessions, and her compassion for the client coupled with her passion for what she does really shines. Have one session with her and you’ll request her every time!

I’ve taken classes with Roxlyn Moret and Doris Hall and Lesley Powell and they are all fabulous. Their classes are light hearted in atmosphere, but very focussed on how to use the body correctly. A change in how I put weight on my feet, which Lesley showed me, helped clear up the pain in my knees when I ran. They all make sure you do movements to push the limits of your body, and no more. And Lesley will make you laugh, even while you sweat.
